When first responders are able to communicate, the public is better served. Minnesota is leading the way in helping first responders understand the benefits of a dedicated wireless broadband network. A network that would provide service when cell towers are over capacity during an emergency. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Emergency Communication Networks division (DPS-ECN) is working with Elk River Fire Chief John Cunningham and other first responders as well as NewCore Wireless to showcase how such a network would be useful during a crisis. The first planning meeting focused on possible scenarios and locations for a mock event that would allow first responders to use a network created by NewCore Wireless. This network is currently only available for test purposes. ​
